USB 3.0 is coming

USB 3.0 is expected to hit the market in early 2010. It will have been 10 years since the now ubiquitous USB 2.0 was introduced (April 2000). The current USB 2.0 specification runs at a theoretical maximum speed of 480Mbps, and can supply power. But the USB 3.0 promises a theoretical maximum rate of 5Gbps, meaning it's 10 times faster than USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is also full duplex, meaning it can upload and download simultaneously. USB 2.0 is only half duplex.

Comparing with eSATA and FireWire 800, USB 3.0 is far superior. eSATA, an external connection that runs at the same speed as the internal SATA 1.0 bus, has a maximum theoretical of 3Gbps. This makes USB 3.0 faster than eSATA and about six times faster than FireWire 800 (full duplex at 800Mbps). USB 3.0 also provides another advantage; while eSATA is faster than FireWire 800, unlike FireWire it cannot supply power. USB 3.0 has the advantage of being faster than both, even while supplying power. Finally, USB 3.0 has improved power management, meaning that devices can move into idle, suspend and sleep states. This potentially means more battery life out of laptops and other battery-based USB-supporting devices like cameras and mobile phones.

Intel already showed it in CES 2009. Wait till the shipping starts...

Apple's Red edition ipods

Apple launches RED Special Edition iPod models and iTunes Gift Cards, and Apple gives a portion of the purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Apple says, "You make choices every day, from the clothes you wear to the music you play. Now making a choice means making a difference. That’s because proceeds from every iPod shuffle, iPod nano, or iTunes Gift Card RED sold go directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa".

The Global Fund.

The numbers don’t lie: More than 4,400 people die every day from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, and almost 2,000 children are infected with HIV each day. The Global Fund’s RED initiative directs up to 50 percent of gross profits toward African AIDS programs focusing on the health of women and children. Since its introduction, (PRODUCT) RED has delivered over $100 million to the Global Fund. And now you can make an impact by purchasing RED.

Dell's Adamo Laptop! Thinnest or greenest??

Dell announced new laptop Adamo by giving it its own Web site featuring only the Adamo name and the words "coming soon." There s a lot of rumors around it. Link to the Adamo site

The most popular rumor is that the Adamo will be an ultra thin laptop to compete with Apple's Macbook Air. According to multiple sources, the rumors seem to have started with fashion site UptownLife reporting that "Rumor has it that Dell is coming out with a computer called Adamo that will rival the MacBook Air." However, the article at UptownLife has since been removed.

New York Times blog picked up on Uptown Life's rumor, trying to score some more concrete confirmation for the ultra thin laptop. This piece referenced some nervous body language by Dell VP of consumer sales and marketing Michael Tatelman when asked about Dell making a laptop to compete with Air. Tatelman's verbal response to the question was just as telling as his body language, which is to say it was fairly ambiguous. "I think we need to get some iconic products out there, so people associate Dell's brand with other things," the cagey exec said.

Engadget picked up on the Adamo story independent of UptownLife, claiming with an anonymous source that Dell will be marketing the Adamo as "the world's thinnest laptop" and will be made available as early as February. But the Dell also campaigning about greenest Laptops. So greenest or thinnest?

Intel Ships 160GB SSD Drives

Intel announced its X25-M 2.5-inch and X18-M 1.8-inch SATA solid-state drive (SSD) family with a 160GB drive in a 2.5-inch form factor. The X25-M product is already out now, and the 1.8-inch 160GB version will be in next month next month.

Intel announced the 80GB X25-M and X18-M -- it's first entry into the SSD market -- at its Developers Forum in August and shortly after announced the X25-E for enterprise servers and workstations. The 32GB Intel X25-E Extreme SATA is based on Intel's single-level cell NAND flash memory and is designed to maximize the I/p-o/p operations per second, while the X25M is a multi-level cell memory affording it greater capacity.

Computerworld reviewed the 80GB X25-M september and found it to be the fastest consumer-grade SSD on the market to date. The X25-M even beat out Western Digital's fastest Velociraptor hard disk drive, which has a 250.2MB/sec. burst speed and 105.6MB/sec. average read speed. The X25-M turned in 256.7MB/sec. and 230.2MB/sec. burst and transfer rates, respectively. Intel did not immediately offer pricing on the new 160GB X25-M and X18-M drives.

NVIDIA's dual GPU GTX 295 video card is to be launch on Jan 8th

NVIDIA's new GPU GTX 295 is to be launch at at CES 2009 on Jan 8th. It uses dual 55nm GTX 200 GPU. According to Guru 3G, the 295 has the same memory and core frequencies of a pair of GTX 260 GPUs, but the GPUs enjoy the same shader power of a pair of GTX 280 GPUs. Total memory for the card is 1792MB, each GPU has 240 shaders, core frequency is 576MHz and shader frequency is 1242MHz. With that, much performance on tap power consumption might be a concern.

In addition to the pair of DVI ports on the card, the reference design also offers a HDMI out. Performance is really what gamers want to know when a new video card is released. Guru3D ran the card at 2560 x 1600 on Far Cry 2 and the game was set at HQ DX10 mode, 4xAA and 16x AF for testing. The review found that the GTX 295 provided 54 FPS compared to the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2's 49 fps at the same settings. However, when the AA was jumped up to 8x, the performance lead was in the Radeon 4870 X2's favor with 31 FPS compared to 24 FPS for the GTX 295.

The price is roughly $499. The main competent of GTX 295 will be ATI Radeon 4870 X2. Lets wait and see which will..

Updated:

The $499(ish) 295 includes dual 55-nm GT200 GPUs and supports nearly 2GB of memory, while the $399 285 makes do with but one processor and an undisclosed RAM ceiling (though the upcoming Winfast, pictured above, comes with 1GB and one yellow robot). Again the 295 is up for order now, while slightly more budget conscious gamers will have to wait until January 15 for the 285.

TOSHIBA ANNOUNCED INDUSTRY’S FIRST 512GB SOLID STATE DRIVE

Toshiba announced the expansion of their line up of NAND-flash-based solid state drives (SSD) with the industry's first 2.5-inch 512-gigabyte (GB)1 SSD and a broad family of fast read/write SSDs based on 43 nanometer (nm) Multi-Level Cell NAND.The new drives provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems, and will be showcased at International CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 – 11, 2009.

In addition to the 2.5-inch, 512GB drive, the 43nm NAND SSD family also includes capacities of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, offered in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch drive enclosures or as SSD Flash Modules. Samples of the new drives will be available in the first quarter (January to March) of 2009, with mass production in the second (April to June) quarter.

Toshiba's second-generation SSDs bring increased capacity and performance for notebook computers. They utilize an advanced MLC controller, which is also compatible with further advanced processes, that achieves higher read/write speeds, parallel data transfers and wear leveling to optimize performance, reliability and endurance. The drives enable improved system responsiveness with a maximum sequential read speed of 240MB per second (MBps)2 and maximum sequential write speed of 200MBps enabling an improvement in overall computing experience, and faster boot and application loading times. The drives also offer AES data encryption to prevent unauthorized data access.
